Four baby bluebirds fledged at the ages of 16-17 days old. I failed to photograph it which I'm sad about...But a big CONGRATULATIONS to the bluebirds! My thanks to Dr. Dean C. Rust of Lancaster, PA, for his support and help...and for making this great nest box for me.
Today I received my first order of live mealworms. Daddy bluebird was quick to find the first few I set out for him. He actually ended up eating these worms himself instead of feeding the babies. I wanted these gut filled mealworms to help the babies after they fledged and I hope they do help them, but the worms are just kinda gross. The dried mealworms offer almost the same nutritional value.
In this image I had seen the babies starting to look out the box and was trying to position myself in an attempt to photograph the fledge. Momma bluebird was not going to put up with it and positioned herself in this defensive position. So I left and the babies fledged without me photographing it.
